For old pieces of oak furniture which has collected a lot of wax buildup to clean it effectively you will need to strip it down to the original finish. To do this use furniture wax strippers which are available in the cleaning supply section of most home improvement stores. Before applying the solution test its effect on an inconspicuous spot before applying to the entire piece. To apply the solution use a soft lint-free cloth or and for difficult spots use steel wool. Rub with the grain of the oak, repeating this method necessary until all of the wax buildup is removed.
