The Oak Living Room Furniture Guide to cleaning oak furniture.
To keep your oak furniture pieces in good condition dust them once a week with a soft dry cloth. To remove dust deposits on your oak furniture avoid using all-purpose cleaners instead use a damp mild soap and water solution. Make sure the surface is completely dry after cleaning.
Most furniture polishes can be used on oak furniture but a mild solution of Lemon Oil will help the furniture clean better. Furniture polishes will provide a protective layer for oak however they can leave a residue that may affect future refinishing of the wood. When using furniture polish to put the polish directly onto the wiping cloth and not on the furniture. This will prevent spotting on staining effects on the oak surface.
Bees wax polish can also be used on Oak furniture. When using bees wax polish protect the furniture by using glass coasters and not setting items on the piece that may scratch the surface of the wood.
For old pieces of oak furniture which has collected a lot of wax buildup to clean it effectively you will need to strip it down to the original finish. To do this use furniture wax strippers which are available in the cleaning supply section of most home improvement stores. Before applying the solution test its effect on an inconspicuous spot before applying to the entire piece. To apply the solution use a soft lint-free cloth or and for difficult spots use steel wool. Rub with the grain of the oak, repeating this method necessary until all of the wax buildup is removed.
